Week of September 3, 2018

Dear Families,

It has been three fantastic weeks of first grade!  We are already on day 12! We are still working on procedures and rules, and everyone is trying their best.  We're still getting used to the longer day of first grade, and getting better each day. :)

Great News!  We have a Music Teacher and a second PE Coach, starting the week of September 10th!  We will have Music on Tuesdays and PE on Thursdays (Coach Justin) and Fridays (Rhythm and Moves Coach, I will know their name soon).

I will send home homework packet #2 on Tuesday.  We will work on the Word of the Week in class on Tuesday.

Today we had our first PE Class with Coach Justin.  Ask your child what they played today. We will have PE with Coach Justin every Thursday.

We will be making Foil Art in the Makerspace Lab on Monday, September 10 at 10:45.  I will need 5 parent helpers, mostly supervising students with hot glue guns. The activity will take about an hour.  Please let me know if you would like to help.

Next week, I will start some of our assessments with the children for Math and Reading.

Friday, September 7th is Picture Day.  You may order pictures before picture day, online at mylifetouch.com.  Enter Picture Day ID: BY418706Q0

Week of August 27, 2018

It was nice to meet all of you at Back To School Night.  Feel free to email me or stop by after school if you have further questions.  Thank you for all that you have signed up for - to help our class this year! I know you are busy with work and home life, so I really appreciate your help – it makes a BIG difference in our class!
I apologize for the lengthy email but I wanted to mention a few more things at Back-to-School Night:
We will begin the Recess 101 PE (funded by the AVHSC) with Coach Justin on Thursday.  Please be sure your child is wearing sneakers and comfortable clothing.
We had our first meeting with our 4th Grade (Mrs. Hamamjy’s class) Buddies.  We will meet together on Friday mornings for about 20 minutes each week.

Homework Packet no.1 was sent home today.  It will be due on Thursday, August 30th or Tuesday, September 4th.  Your child may do the pages in the order of his/her or your choice. The last page of the packet is called the Word of the Week page; I will collect and keep these to make a book for each child at the end of the year.   **The Word Of The Week can be found on the backside of the Homework Cover Sheet.**

The week of September 10th, we will start our BEAR SHARE (Sharing).  I updated the schedule and assignments on our classroom web page and attached the schedule to your BTSN packet.
The week of September 24th, we will begin Special Person of The Week.  The schedule is on our web page and a copy is in your BTSN packet.
**Students may have water bottles on their desk throughout the school day.  However, please do not send juice or sports drinks for inside the classroom.
As a safety precaution classroom doors are locked during the day.  If you are coming to school to volunteer, please sign in at the office to get a sticker badge (even if it makes you a minute late to help).
If you haven’t done so already, please fill out the online AVHSC Volunteer, participation, and communication distribution.   https://www.myschoolanywhere.com/join.a5w  JOIN CODE:  AltaVista

Week of August 20, 2018

Dear Families,

What a great first week of school!  Your first grader has been learning many new routines for room 1 and rules for the primary playground.  Your child is probably feeling a bit tired after school due to transitioning to a longer school day and getting back to a school schedule.  It usually takes a few weeks, but they'll feel better adjusted soon!

I will email you our Weekly Newsletter on Friday (or sometimes during the weekend).  I will also post a copy to our Class Blog.  You can connect to the Blog through our school website, by going to Classroom Pages, then under First Grade, then Staff, and then click on my name.

I will send home our 1st weekly homework packet on Friday, August 24th and it will be due the following week on Friday.  Homework is usually due on Fridays, however, because of the long weekend, please return this first packet on either Thursday, August 30th or Tuesday, September 4th.

August 22rd is Back to School Night for ParentsWe will meet in room 1, at 6:00 pm to go over First Grade throughout the year.  After our meeting, there is a Principal's Welcome and AV Home and School Club meeting in the Cafeteria from 6:45-7:15.  If you have children in 4th or 5th grade, their classroom presentations will begin at 7:15.

Just in case you need our Home and School Club's website, it has a lot of information about upcoming events at school. www.avhsc.org

Thank you for sending me all your email addresses!  If you need to add or eliminate any addresses, please let me know.

Here are some pictures from today’s Marshmallow Design.  =)

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
