September 7, 2020

 Dear Families,

I hope you are staying cool this weekend.  It was our anniversary yesterday, so we decided to sneak away to Lake Tahoe for a couple days. Your children are doing a wonderful job doing Distance Learning.  I know it’s not easy, and I appreciate all of them and your efforts.

This week’s theme is “Think Like a Scientist.” Here are the Weekly Plans.

Math Groups:

We will start practicing math groups this week. Math is from 10:20-11:20 am. This time slot will be split into 2 groups. Group 1 will meet with me first while group 2 will work on lessons in Seesaw & Zearn. Then we will switch at 10:50 am so I can meet with group 2. The groups are not skill-based groups yet. These groups will allow me to get to know your child’s math skills better. Here are our Math Groups for this week.

***Reading Assessment:

Please help your child find a very quiet space to record themselves reading & retelling a passage on the Literably app to do their Reading Assessment from 12-1 pm this Wednesday:  Literably app. I will show them how to do the assessment during our zoom class on Wednesday morning. If your child attends daycare at that time, please find another time within the week for your child to complete the assessment. Please complete this by Friday evening.  If you need more time, please let me know.

School Supply Pick-up, 9/14:

Monday, 9/14 is another supply pick up day from 12-1 pm for all first graders. Drive through the main parking lot to your teacher’s table and pick up the next month’s school supplies.

Reflex Math App:

If your child has a personal device, NOT a school device:  Please download the Reflex Math Facts App. We will be using this app starting Monday, 9/14. This is what the app looks like:

Parent-Teacher Conferences:

Sign up for October conferences: Fall Conference Sign-Ups sent via email. I will share my assessment data with you and address concerns you may have.

Thank you for your continued support and flexibility.

August 30, 2020

 Dear Families,

Here are our Weekly Plans.  I will continue to push out the plans in Seesaw-Activities, for students to work on, based on this schedule.  Remember it will take us some time to develop a routine. I will post all our weekly lessons here, this link is also located on my email signature.

This week we will start small group practice starting at 12:20 after Read to Self.  They will run for about 20-30 minutes. We will start with one small group per day this week.  Here are our groups for the week. Please note that these groups are not permanent and children may move into different groups. When your child is not working with me, they should be working on the Afternoon Work - independent work.  I will be available for office hours before and after each small group this week.  I will also keep these on our Weekly Lessons Page.

A note on BrainPopJr.: Students should log into the Clever app first, then click Brainpop Jr. so that their device remembers their login. Then students can then click on the link in Seesaw which will take them to the linked lesson.

I hope you are enjoying your Sunday.

August 28, 2020

 Dear Parents,

A couple questions came up at our Wednesday Parent Meeting, one was about the Weekly Plan requesting to sign in to Google Docs and the other was how to get a schedule for class meetings.

Can you try something for me? Can you log into the Google Drive app on the USD Student iPad.  Then click on the link from a Seesaw Activity.  We are hoping the automatic sign-in will kick in and they won't have to log in to see the Google Document (Weekly Plans).

Thank you Mark Hoehne for sending out instructions so we can try that.  I also asked our district if they could push out the Google Calendar app to our iPADs.  I haven’t heard back from them yet, but I hope to soon.

We are still finalizing our Weekly Plans for next week and I will get them out as soon as they are ready.

Happy Friday!

August 23, 2020

 Dear Families,

I hope you are enjoying your weekend and staying safe from the smoke in the air.

Weekly Work:

This is for your reference so you can use it to help your child if they feel lost, but please know that I will be teaching them what to do.  I will push out Activities in Seesaw, for students to work on, based on this schedule.  Remember it will take us some time to develop a routine. I will begin to post all our weekly lessons on one page.

This week, I want to try and create the assignments for the students in Seesaw to avoid having to click on the Google Doc Lesson Plan.  I will share this with our class during our Morning Meeting.

Writing:

I would like the students to use paper when possible for writing assignments, unless, I have a template posted in a Seesaw activity.  Here is some line paper to print.  If you have access to a printer, please print a few pages (page 1 only) each week for your child. Binder paper, or the paper in the yellow folder is okay to use as well.  If paper is an issue, please let me know, I am happy to help.

Alta Vista Home and School Club:

Here you can read the latest AVHSC newsletter.  You can also connect to the AVHSC Directory confirmation or set up, donations, and volunteer opportunities.

August 16, 2020

 Dear Parents,

It was so nice to meet all of you last week. Our Curriculum Overview Meeting will be on Aug 26th at 4 pm on Zoom.

Supplies Needed For School This Week:

Seesaw.  Students should have access to their Seesaw account.  I will attach the link if your child still needs to connect.

Clever Badge.  Please find their Clever Badge on a purple index card. We will need this card this week and going forward.

Eureka Math Workbooks.  If you have Post-it notes at home, please place one post-it note on each workbook, I will show the students what to do with them.

Red Everyday Folder.  I will explain to the students what they will need from their folders.

Epic Codes were emailed to one parent in your household.  Please let me know if you don’t see one for your child.  Our class Epic Reading code is  yca9046.  It is free from 6 am to 3 pm during the week with this class code.

Work Structure:

This week will look a little different from last week since the 1:1 meetings are done. I plan to teach the students how to work independently during their independent work time so I will be leaving the zoom meeting open after our class meeting for students to be able to check in with me throughout their independent work time. After our morning meetings this week, students will be asked to mute themselves and go off to do their work. They will be able to come back to the zoom room to ask questions about their work and then go back to finish their work.

After recess, I will bring them all back to zoom at 10:20 am to start their math session. Students will be able to come back to ask questions.

I will do the same after lunch, but the afternoon zoom session will be optional since many of our students are off to childcare in the afternoons and most students need a break from zoom. The work is still mandatory, but joining Zoom from 12 pm to 2 pm is optional.

Our closing meetings at 2:00 pm will offer a student check-in, social-emotional skills, community building,  or a read-aloud.

Here is a child-friendly view of our schedule and Zoom (Class Time Etiquette)  which you may post near their workspace.

District Calendar:

Here is a copy of the USD Calendar for the 2020-2021 school year.

Weekly Work: Here is the work we will be doing this week.

These emails will become shorter in time. :)

August 15, 2020

 Hello Families,

We made it through the first few days.  Thank you for helping your child get to school on time each day! I'm hoping the students are learning how to log into Zoom themselves, so eventually, they can log in by themselves when asked to do so by Mom or Dad. In my house, waking up early an starting a schedule was hard on day one, but it got a tiny bit better each day.  I’m hoping that as we get deeper into our schedule, things will be smoother for you as well.

I wanted to explain what was in the bags you picked up yesterday.  Here is a little explanation.  I will be reviewing the items in class with the students on Monday as well.

I will usually send a weekly email about what is to come for the following week on Fridays.  My team (including myself) was exhausted yesterday, so we will work on getting you an email tomorrow with the week’s information.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

Stay cool and enjoy your weekend!

August 11, 2020

It was nice to see you earlier today!  Please let me know if you would like me to email you the recorded meeting.

I wanted to send this information to you right after our meeting, but I had two of my own children’s orientation meetings that ran back to back.  Some of you might have been in other meetings as well! :)

School supply pick-up for first grades is this Friday, 8/14 from 10:00-11:00.

Attached is the QR code for students to join Seesaw.  I will send a separate email this week for the link for parents to join (It is a different app). We will not be using Seesaw until Monday, 8/17.

If you’re interested, I will attach a few “First Day of School” signs that your child can hold for a picture for you.

Our Zoom ID is provided in email.

I can’t wait to see my first graders tomorrow at 8:30!
