Week of September 30, 2019

Dear Families,

We had a great time on our field trip to see The Cat In The Hat.  We will have two more field trips this school year, one to the De Anza Planetarium, and another to YSI and Vasona in the spring.

Don’t forget to register for the Alta Vista Walkathon.  Even if you can’t make it that day, your child will receive a t-shirt with a $50.00 donation.  The t-shirts are usually passed out in class on the Friday before the event. So far we have 9 friends from Room 1 signed up!  Altavistawalkathon.dojiggy.com

We have two fun projects that we need parent help with on Friday, October 4th.
At 9:30 we will be creating Cardboard Challenge projects in the Makerspace.  We would love 5-6 or more parents to help with cutting cardboard and using the hot glue guns.
At 1:00 we will be working on our first Clay project for the school year.  We would love 5-6 parent helpers for prepping, guiding, and help with clean up.

Additionally, we would love your cardboard donations for our project in the Makerspace.  Boxes the size of shoeboxes are perfect. Your child will be bringing home their creations that day.

Please remember library books for Thursday.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Week of September 23, 2019

Dear Families,

On Thursday, we worked in the MakerSpace with Straws and Connectors.  The students worked in groups to build a bridge. The challenge was to see if their bridge could withstand a road (a thick piece of paper) as well as a car.

We had a great Cornerstone lesson today with Nina (Katie's mom) and Nisha (Aarti's mom). They read the story, Stand Tall Molly Lou. A letter came home today with more information.

For sharing this week, students may write down one way they show respect at home.  No need to write any clues. :)

We visit the library on Thursdays from 1:00-1:30.  Students can check out one book each week. If your child forgets their book the following week, they cannot check out a new book.

If you have any questions or concerns about the homework or if your child is spending more than 10 minutes a day on the packet, please let me know.  The packet will be due next Friday, 9/27.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Friday, September 20: First homework packet

Week of September 16, 2019

Dear Families,

Thank you to our parent helpers in the makerspace today: Erika, Sonya, Brandie, Preveena, Amanda, and Lisa.  The students had a good time creating their own foil art. You can see them on your child’s seesaw account.

We lost electricity at school for about 30 minutes, so that was a bit exciting!  Luckily most of the time was during snack recess. Thank you, Brandie (Jonathan's mom), for bringing in lanterns, just in case.

This Friday, I will send home our first homework packet.  It will be due the following Friday, September 27th. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you for preparing your child for their share assignment this week.  We enjoyed learning about all the rules and why they are important. This coming week, our sharing assignment is an item.  Please help your child prepare three clues. Students can keep their sharing in their backpack, in a paper or reusable bag until it’s sharing time.

I hope you have a nice weekend.

Week of September 9, 2019

Dear Families,

This week we will start Bear Share (sharing).  Please see our class website for your child’s share date and assignment.  Your child should be prepared to share their sentence or item.  For sentences, students may write it down and I can help them if they forget.  For items, we ask students to prepare to share 3 simple clues describing their item.  In turn, they will get to choose 3 students to guess before revealing their share.

We visited the school library on Thursday.  Each student was able to check out a book. Please return the book to our classroom by Thursday morning to ensure your child can check out a new book.

Mileage Club will start on Monday the 9th.  Mileage Club is on Mondays and Fridays during lunchtime.  This is a great way for students to talk with friends and exercise at the same time.  There are some rewards along the way for laps walked on the field.

Wednesday, September 11 is a Student Council Spirit Day, wear red, white, and blue.

If your child would like to buy lunch from the cafeteria, the fee is $3.50.  Each student in our school has an account and if you’d like to add money to his or her account online, you will need your child’s student ID.  If you need that number, send me a quick email and I’ll be happy to get it for you.

Tonight, the AVHSC will host Back To School Movie Night!  Located on the large field. Featuring, Lego Movie 2. Admission is free and the whole family is welcome (no dogs please.) Feel free to bring a picnic dinner and there will also be some concessions opening at 6 pm.  The movie starts at about 7:30 pm. *No Bikes or Scooters Allowed. ***It’s a good idea to have a meeting spot in case you get separated in the dark.***
