Week of May 1, 2017

Dear families,

Wow!  I can't believe that it's May already!  There are many upcoming, fun events happening at Alta Vista.  To name a few: The Art Vistas Show, Fantasy Faire, Olympic Day, and the End-of-the-Year Class Party.

Thank you for coming to our show this morning!  The children did an outstanding job!  I'm so proud of each and every actor/actress for reciting their lines and the songs.  Thank you parents for helping your child practice their lines and finding their costumes.

I sent home Homework packet #28 today.  We worked on the Book Report together so that page should be complete.  We used and read the story, The Pigeon Needs A Bath by Mo Willems.

We have really enjoyed seeing all the many places Stanley has been to.  If your Stanley Display is ready, please bring him in when you can.  He’s not due until May 10th, but if you need more time, let me know.

Along with a few other teachers I will be attending a GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) training from May 4-11th.  We will have three different subs during this time, which are all great with first graders.  We will have Mrs. Chinchiolo, Mrs. Hodges, and Mrs. McGowan.

Thank you parent volunteers!  We've had a busy week with Clay, library, and SPARK. Thank you!!

Don’t forget your books for the library.

Enjoy your weekend!

Week of April 24, 2017

It was great to see and hear about all the creations made from recycled products!  Thank you for your help with this project.

Our class continues to work on a play based on the story, The Great Kapok Tree.  We will perform for you on Friday, April 28th at 8:30am in the cafeteria.  I hope you can join us!  Please help your child to memorize their lines (nice and slow).

Each child has a role in the play that we will be performing.  I have a few pieces for costumes, but I will need your help.  If you could have your child wear colors that represent that animal.  Please don’t buy anything new.  The readers may wear pants/jeans and their class t-shirt.

Today, I sent home the instructions for the Flat Stanley Display and the due date is May 10. Don’t worry if your Flat Stanley has not arrived back home yet.  The due dates are guideline dates.  My only request is that I have them a few days before Open House (5/24), so I can add them to the wall display.

Please look out for another email about our Class Book being published.

Just a reminder, if you are attending the Volunteer Appreciation Social on April 26th, (1:30-2:30), please return your RSVP on Monday.

I hope to see you at Multicultural Night!

Week of April 17, 2017

We had a great field trip at Vasona-YSI this past week! I really appreciate our students and parents for being flexible on the two dates. The students had a hands-on introduction to physics. We were able to determine how Sound travels differently on/in different states of matter. We also learned about Motion and the force of flight by creating a paper airplane and paper rocket. We also walked around Vasona Park to complete a Visual Scavenger Hunt! A big thank you to our parent chaperones: Mrs. Ratinoff, Mrs. Gelonese, Mrs. Brehmer, Mrs. Li, Mrs. Chun, Mrs. Kasenchak, Mrs. Hew, and Mrs. Pregliasco!! We could not have done it without you!

I’m looking forward to the student’s Recycle Projects. If your child’s project is finished earlier in the week, feel free to bring it in before Friday. I will also attach the Recycle Project instructions to this email. We do not have a regular homework packet this week.

Friday, April 24th is Multi-Culture Night at Alta Vista, it is a great learning event for everyone. Many cultures and countries are represented through Alta Vista families. This event runs from 5:00-8:00.

The deadline for ordering yearbooks is May 5. The charge is $25 for hardcover and $20 for softcover. The website for online ordering is: altavista.picaboo.com

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Week of April 10, 2017

I hope you enjoyed a nice Spring Break with your first grader.

Don’t forget about Flat Stanley! I hope your child was able to send out his/her Flat Stanley or take him along on your family trip during the break. We are hoping to display something from each student at Open House in May.

Last week, I sent home information about our Project Recycle, which will take place of our regular homework packet, during the week of April 17. The project is due on Friday, April 21, however if it’s finished early, your child may bring it in any day that week.

The students had about 15 minutes in class to get started on homework packet #26. It will be due on Monday, April 17.

On Tuesday OR Thursday your child will be going on a field trip to Vasona Park - Youth Science Institute. We will be gone most of the day, so your child will need to bring a snack/lunch in a paper bag, disposable water, and a jacket (depending on the weather). Please have your child wear our bear class t-shirt.
